Rusty Relic to Rolling Refreshment: The Red Top Transformation
My love for craft beer and the energy of events steered me towards a mobile celebration hub with a unique twist. It had to be special, functional, and a guaranteed conversation starter.
Then, a beacon emerged online: a lovingly restored '1960 Bedford J1' truck, nestled in the remote north of New South Wales. It was a one-way ticket kind of moment, an undeniable pull towards this vintage beauty.
This wasn't just a truck; it was a testament to dedication, a conversation piece waiting to happen. The previous owner, unable to drive it anymore, wanted it to be enjoyed – to bring joy to countless people.

A Bedford's Life Well Lived: From Council Workhorse to Craft Beer Haven
Our story begins in 1960, with a brand new Bedford J1 rolling off the production line. This wasn't any ordinary Bedford though; it was destined for a life of service, initially purchased by the Toowoomba City Council for a cool £1066. Assigned to the council's Plumbing section, you could say it got its first taste of what was to come! It likely spent its early years tackling leaky pipes and clogged drains, a far cry from the delicious libations it would one day dispense.
Later, the trusty Bedford found itself transferred to the electricians department, its orange council colours a familiar sight throughout rural farms. In 1995, after years of loyal service, it was sold to a farmer near Murwhillumbah for a mere $500AUD. This could have been the end of the story, but fate intervened.
Enter Russell, who saw the potential beyond the faded paint and worn seats. He took the Bedford on as a labour of love, meticulously restoring it to its pristine condition. Little did he know, this dedicated restoration would pave the way for the Bedford's next chapter – a chapter filled with good times, delicious craft beers, and unforgettable celebrations.
From Dream to Draft: Red Top Takes the Wheel
With Russell's blessing, the adventure began. A slow and scenic chug south to Melbourne at 70km/h, the waves and friendly honks a welcome soundtrack. Back home, the project hit some Covid delays, but with the help of my amazing husband and some skilled tradies (some who happily accepted beer as payment!), we transformed the Bedford into the ultimate bar on wheels.
In a way, it was a return to its plumbing roots, but this time the focus was on flawlessly flowing beverages rather than leaky pipes!

Eight gleaming taps now dispense a delightful range of beverages – craft beers you'll love, refreshing ciders, even pre-mixed cocktails and spirits to satisfy every taste. A rustic, vintage bar adds character, while the "business side" ensures smooth sailing with massive chillers, a flawless draft system, and everything needed for any event, hot water for sparkling glasses included.
This classic beauty may be old, but she's reliable and built tough. The eight taps cater to all tastes, making your event truly unforgettable. We're ready to roll up to your event, add a touch of vintage charm, and keep the drinks flowing for an unforgettable celebration!
